MORAN
Moran was a courtesan of Amritsar. She shot into fame when she became
the wedded wife of Ranjit Singh the Maharaja of the Punjab in 1801. Moran
had a palace inside Mori gate Lahore, and according to one account Mori
gate was named after her. Ranjit Singh struck a coin in her name. In 1809
she constructed a mosque inside Shah Alam gate known as Moran Masjid.
She presented a beautiful copy of the Holy Quran at the Darbar of Hazrat
Data Ganj Bakhsh. Because of her intervention the Sunheri Masjid was restored
to the Muslims. She died in 1817 and was buried in Miani Sahib graveyard.
