MUGHLANI BEGUM Mughlani Begum was the Viceroy of the Punjab from 1754 to 1756. Her mother was a daughter of Abdus Samad Khan the viceroy of the Punjab from 1713 to 1726. She was the wife of Mir Mannu the Viceroy of the Punjab from 1748 to 1754. On the death of her husband, Mughlani Begum became the Viceroy of the Punjab. Installed inpower she betrayed the weakness of her sex. Her clandestine love affairs became the subject matter of scandal and she was deposed. She was restored to office with the assistance of Ahmad Shah but could not hold power for long. She sought refuge in Jammu where she became notorious for loose living. Ultimately she married the manager of her household and retired to a hillside village Samba where she died in 1779 in destitution and obscurity. That was the sad end of the woman who had at one time ruled over the Punjab as the Viceroy.
